Cinema Strange: Weekend Viewing 06/15/09

Here’s what I caught this past weekend:

Queen of Black Magic

Mystics in Bali

As you can tell, it was a fine sampling of forgotten gore classics from the East, both courtesy of the dandy shock-fetish DVD distributor Mondo Macabro. The company specializes in tracking down hard-to-find gems of horror, sexploitation, and action from around the globe. My only gripe is the lack of English subtitles on their releases and they don’t seem to pay as much attention to remastering the sound as they do the picture, but those are small gripes when you get to see films like this.

Not to give you the wrong impression here: there are times when you want to see a quality production with competent direction and actors who are at least somewhat capable in their craft, and then there are times you want to watch Mystics in Bali. Still, when you get treated to a movie where the lead actress becomes a flying severed head that sucks the blood out of a pregnant woman’s vagina, you really can’t gripe about the lack of production value.

I got far more out of Queen of Black Magic, which was better shot and better performed, and featured some terrific gags, like the guy who rips his own head off shown in the clip above. Mondo Macabro did a great job of remastering the print, so the effects work really shines. I enjoyed the hell out of it.
